Memorable quote from the article: “The company uses language as a filter.” Explanation: the company (Woot.com) isn’t in business to serve everybody, but for those who “get it” they are right on target. The right language serves to direct and inform the public.
So, guess what? You don’t have to be everything to everybody. Let your words do the work, and let the public decide if they’re privileged enough to be your customers.
And if you’re doubtful of this approach, just remember, there is definitely a middle road.

The Joy of Networking
I’ve been thinking a lot about Networking Mixers lately. You know–the meet & greets, the seminars, the business breakfasts where your main purpose for attending is to smile, chat, shake hands and exchange business cards.
Well, OK, maybe that’s not really your main purpose. The main purpose is to drum up new business, right?
So you grab a drink, because you’re thirsty, you’re nervous and you think the wine will help, or someone once told you that people with drinks in their hand look friendlier and more approachable. Or maybe all of the above. Then you head out into the crowd . . . (more…)
